Hidden deep within the canals of Xochimilco in Mexico City, an eerie and unsettling sight awaits those who seek it out – the Island of the Dolls. As the name suggests, the island is covered in dolls hanging from trees and wires, their lifeless eyes staring back at visitors. Legend has it that the island’s former owner, Don Julian Santana, discovered the body of a drowned girl in the canal and was haunted by her spirit. In an attempt to appease her, he began collecting dolls and hanging them all over the island. Visitors to the island today report feeling uneasy and even claim that the dolls move on their own.
